The Washtenaw County Probate Court is part of the Family Division of the Trial Court.  The Probate Court has jurisdiction over the following:

• Adoptions
• Conservatorships 
• Estates
• Guardianships
• Mental Health 
• Registration of Foreign Births
• Wills

Attorneys and the Probate Court

While there is no legal requirement that people use attorneys for probate proceedings, it is highly recommended. Probate proceedings of all types can be complex and difficult to understand. The Probate Court office maintains a list of attorneys who have been trained in probate procedures and who regularly practice in the Probate Court.

In cooperation with the Washtenaw County Bar Association, free legal advice regarding basic probate matters is available on a monthly basis in the Probate Court office. Contact the Probate Court to schedule an appointment.
